Recently I picked up the engaging novel “Under the Influence” by Joynce Maynard. For those of you don’t know, she is also the author of the bestselling novels “Labor Day” and “After Her” and she has been featured in the New York Times as well.
This is a touching novel about friendship and addiction. Helen, who was once a promising art photographer, now struggles with alcohol addiction and raising her young son. Then her life is changed when she meets wealthy philanthropists Ava and Swift Havilland. Through them, she also meets Elliott, an introverted accountant who she starts dating.
Much of this novel centers on the debts that sometimes accompany frienships, and chosing between truth and friendship. It is a powerful and engaging novel that I really enjoyed! If you are looking for a novel to read during Christmas vacation, I highly recommend this book. It’s available both in hardcover and softcover editions, and you can also download it for your Kindle. There is also an Audio CD version, but I don’t recommend it as it costs over $40, but maybe Audible might offer a more affordable audio version soon.
